HD Just Isn’t Enough For Wii U Says Nintendo Of America President

Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime has reiterated that gorgeous HD visuals aren’t enough to entice today’s consumers and that the main selling point for Wii U will be the fact that you’ll be using two screens for gaming. Reggie firmly believes that the combination of a big first screen coupled with a second smaller screen will change the gaming industry as we currently know it.

“The big innovation with the Wii U is the controller and the ability to have an interactive experience that leverages all of your traditional input buttons as well as a screen built right into the controller. Yes, the system is HD capable; it’ll generate the most gorgeous pictures. But for us that’s not enough.”

“We need to continue pushing the overall experience forward. We need to bring new types of entertainment. New types of gaming and the combination of a big first screen — your home TV — coupled with a second screen in your hands, in our view, is going to bring gaming to a whole new experience and to continue driving the industry.”

“We had to go back and reduce the price of 3DS and we certainly don’t want to go through that when we launch Wii U.”

Reggie Fils-Aime talks a little bit about Wii U

Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime believes that Wii U will disrupt thr market just like with Wii and DS. Reggie wouldn’t go into specifics, but he did state that Nintendo will be taking advantage of the Wii U’s second screen and the all-round connectivity the console offers.

“The Wii U has to deliver a differentiated experience that can only be brought to bear through the use of these two screens. If all we do is a beautiful game in HD, it’s been done before. We have to take advantage of the second screen, we need to take advantage of the connectivity that the system will offer and, if we do that, we believe that we will yet again disrupt the market the same way we with DS and Wii.”

Nintendo Not Interested in DLC

Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime has Told AOL’s Games Blog that Nintendo isn’t interested in First Party Downloadable Content as they wish to make the consumer feel they have bought the full game. Nintendo may add additional downloadable content after launch, but only when it makes sense to for the company to do so and not necessarily for a charge.

“We’re interested in it to the extent that it makes sense to the consumer.”

“I’ve had this conversation with a number of our key developers, and their mentality is, ‘Reggie, when we sell a game, we want the consumer to feel that they’ve had a complete experience.’

“Now, in addition, if we want to make other things available, great, and we’ll look at that. But we’re unwilling to sell a piece of a game upfront and, if you will, force a consumer to buy more later.

“That’s what they don’t want to do, and I completely agree. I think the consumer wants to get, for their money, a complete experience, and then we have opportunities to provide more on top of that.”
